September 30- Weekly Recap

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Wow! We had a very busy week this week with lots of really fun learning.

We began each day by reading our poems from our poetry books. The students loved using our new finger pointers!

If you check your child's backpack, they have brought their poetry book home to share with you this weekend. Please ensure that you return it to school on Monday.

We also practiced reading our version of a "Brown Bear, Bear Bear, What Do You See?" pattern story based on the book by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle.

Each student began to create their own individual patterned story. As a class, we discussed why creating our stories are important. Below are a few of the reasons that were mentioned by students:
During printing, we practiced properly forming the letters Dd and Gg. We also reviewed the sound(s) each letter can make and completed a picture sort using beginning sounds.

In math, we continued to work on patterning. This week, we learned about AB, ABB, AABB and AAB patterns.

In science, we read the following book:
Ask your child what colour the rabbit would turn if it jumped into:
  • red and yellow paint
  • red and blue paint
  • yellow and red paint
  • all three colours

In class we watched the video "Three Primary Colors" by OK Go from Sesame Street. If you wish to watch it with your child, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu44JRTIxSQ

On Friday, we added white to a colour and black to a colour to see what would happen! Ask your child to tell you what they observed.

We then used our tints/shades to paint in a drawing of a fish that we had previously completed. The students were challenged to use the paint to create a pattern in their fish.

Yesterday, we also learned about the importance of Orange Shirt Day and participated in the Terry Fox Run.

This weekend, your child brought home their first Home Reading book! Please have your child read it to you a minimum of 3 times before you return it to school. In their purple pouch, you will also find a Home Reading Log for you to fill in.

Your child also brought home an "All About Me Bag" to create this weekend. If possible, please return it to school on Monday. We are using the bags to learn more about what makes each of us unique and special! Each student will have the opportunity to share their bag with the class.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The students in Mrs. Witczak's classroom had a substitute this morning because Mrs. Witczak was at a Learning Leader meeting.

At the start of the day, the students worked with a partner to further their oral language skills by sharing their favourite experience from the weekend. They then completed a journal entry and illustrated a picture that matched what they had shared with their partner.

In math, we continued to practice creating and naming AB and ABB patterns. Have your child use actions to demonstrate each type of pattern for you.

This afternoon, we read a book about bullying and discussed what to do if you are being bullied or if you see someone else being bullied. We also discussed how to treat everyone with kindness. Please take the time tonight or over the next few days to discuss the emotions associated with bullying with your child.

Science was very exciting for us today! We were able to participate in a fun science experiment. Mr. Dyck even came to watch!!

We used vinegar, baking soda and food colouring to mix colours today. Ask your child what colours they saw being created from the "foam."

At the end of the day, the students worked on spelling our colouwords and practiced stating the order of the rainbow. Ask your child to show you the "primary" and "secondary" pattern we found in the rainbow.

😀
Reminders:

  • Terry Fox Run and Orange Shirt Day on Friday
  • We are collecting "Toonies for Terry"
  • If you wish to order a fun lunch it is due by October 7. You can order from: www.healthyhunger.ca

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We have been busy the past few days! In science, we have been learning about the primary colours and mixing colours. We have worked with a variety of materials, including: pencil crayons, paint, plasticine and food colouring. Below are some samples of our work:

We did an experiment where we filled 3 beakers with water. We then added red, yellow or blue food colouring to 3 of the beakers. We then added empty beakers between the filled beakers. Finally,  we placed paper towel into a full beaker and placed the other end into an empty beaker. Ask your children what colours appeared in the beakers that had been empty! (HINT: Look at the picture below that has all of the colours😊)

The students each received a few pieces of plasticine in the  primary colours and mixed them together to see what would happen.

We were lucky, because a student brought in the book below to share with the class! It tied in nicely with our colour discussions.

In math, we completed a seasonal sort that was sent home with your child. We have started to work on recognizing, creating, extending and naming AB patterns. Furthermore, we have talked about attributes (this describes what something looks like) as this will help us to name and describe our sorts and patterns.

Have your child complete the pattern below and name it using letters:

😀😍😀😍😀😍😀 ____

On Monday, we wrote in our journals and focused on using our knowledge of letter sounds to
s-t-r-e-t-c-h out unfamiliar words. We have also worked on printing the letter "o" this week and discussed the short sound it makes. Each day we will continue to read our sight word poems to increase our recognition of high frequency words and our fluency!

Requests:
  • We are looking for a few items to complete projects over the next few days. If you have any extra at home, can you please send them in. DO NOT go out and buy anything:)
    • Magazines that are appropriate for student's to look at. We will be cutting them up for a science project. Therefore, they will NOT be returned to you.
    • Empty paper towel tubes
Reminders:

  • There is NO SCHOOL for students on FRIDAY, September 22 or on MONDAY, September 25.

We read poems that included the words and also practiced making them using a variety of different materials.

We read the book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. After that, we began to create our own version of the story. Have your child try to read the first two pages of our story to you.

The students learned to draw a cat and shark using basic shapes, such as circles, triangles, rectangles and squares.

During math, we learned about sorting. Have your child tell you how the following items were sorted in each picture.
