September 30- Weekly Recap

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Wow! We had a very busy week this week with lots of really fun learning.

We began each day by reading our poems from our poetry books. The students loved using our new finger pointers!

If you check your child's backpack, they have brought their poetry book home to share with you this weekend. Please ensure that you return it to school on Monday.

We also practiced reading our version of a "Brown Bear, Bear Bear, What Do You See?" pattern story based on the book by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle.

Each student began to create their own individual patterned story. As a class, we discussed why creating our stories are important. Below are a few of the reasons that were mentioned by students:
During printing, we practiced properly forming the letters Dd and Gg. We also reviewed the sound(s) each letter can make and completed a picture sort using beginning sounds.

In math, we continued to work on patterning. This week, we learned about AB, ABB, AABB and AAB patterns.

In science, we read the following book:
Ask your child what colour the rabbit would turn if it jumped into:
  • red and yellow paint
  • red and blue paint
  • yellow and red paint
  • all three colours

In class we watched the video "Three Primary Colors" by OK Go from Sesame Street. If you wish to watch it with your child, here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu44JRTIxSQ

On Friday, we added white to a colour and black to a colour to see what would happen! Ask your child to tell you what they observed.

We then used our tints/shades to paint in a drawing of a fish that we had previously completed. The students were challenged to use the paint to create a pattern in their fish.

Yesterday, we also learned about the importance of Orange Shirt Day and participated in the Terry Fox Run.

This weekend, your child brought home their first Home Reading book! Please have your child read it to you a minimum of 3 times before you return it to school. In their purple pouch, you will also find a Home Reading Log for you to fill in.

Your child also brought home an "All About Me Bag" to create this weekend. If possible, please return it to school on Monday. We are using the bags to learn more about what makes each of us unique and special! Each student will have the opportunity to share their bag with the class.
