Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we have continued to work on our first 100 sight words, as well as some words from the 200 list. At this point in time, students should be able to recite about 60 of the first 100 sight words, without hesitation (within 2 seconds). We will continue to practice these words in class.

We have continued to recite our poems frequently as well as read our wall story together. We have been practicing reading more quickly and fluently when we read as a class. Today we added two new poems!

The students have been working hard to complete their gingerbread stories. Most students have completed a good chunk of their final copies and are beginning to finish up. Recently, we started an illustration centre  for students who have completed their stories. Ask your child where they are in the process, as we are working hard to use our class time wisely.

We had a discussion and an in-depth lesson today on drawing and outlining. We are working to have the students take their time on their drawings, and use different mediums to achieve different effects. For example, we learned that markers are for outlining and making things stand out, and the rest of the colouring should be done in pencil crayon or crayon. Ask your child what they need to do to create a 4 star illustration.

In science, we have continued to explore new vocabulary that relates to buildings. Ask your child what the words "ancient," "foundation" and "beam" mean. We also discussed the value of walls today. Ask your child what walls are good for aside from just holding up the ceiling.

Students in our class used the straws and connectors to build a house for our gingerbread people this week. Here are some examples of what students came up with.

We made another trip to the Maker Space this week where students had the opportunity to test out new challenges. Here are some things they came up with!

In math, we are practicing answering addition questions using number lines, pictures, tally marks, dice, friends of ten, doubles, near doubles, etc.  Students are expected to show at least one way that they came to their answer.

Reminders:

-In-line skating is coming up soon. Please note that the permission form needs to be signed and returned by Tuesday, March 6th. If the form is not signed and returned, your child will not be able to participate. Helmets are recommended, but not mandatory.
