October 19, 2017

Dear parents and guardians,
Today we had our very first lockdown practice of the year. We explained the meaning of a lockdown to the students yesterday, as well as reviewed procedures. The majority of students did a wonderful job and stayed silent through to the end of the lockdown. Ask your child how they did, and chat with them about the severity of talking during a lockdown.

Please continue to practice our 26 sight words, as well as home reading, with your child. You will notice a new fall themed poem in your child's poetry folder tomorrow. It is one of the most challenging ones they have learned yet, and they are working hard to master it!

While working on our writing this week, the students have been adding new describing words to their vocabularies. Please ask your child how they would describe the following pumpkins:

We worked on some pumpkin writing today.

Over the past week, we completed writing and illustrating our  "Hello Fall, Goodbye Summer" books, which should have come home with your child yesterday.  The students were given lots of time in class to finish their book, so if your child's book is incomplete please have them finish it at home.

In social studies, we have been presenting our "All About Me" bags a few students at a time. It has been a great opportunity for students to share some information about themselves, and to ask questions about their fellow students!

In math, we have continued our work on patterning. Please continue to work with you child on translating (i.e. ABAB or 1212), creating, copying and extending various patterns. We finished our last round of sorting and patterning centres today.

Reminders:

- There is an assembly tomorrow at 10:45. All parents are welcome to attend.
